Sigloo — Privacy Policy

      Sigloo is a Chrome extension that detects acronyms on web pages and shows their
      meanings in a tooltip. This policy explains exactly what data leaves your browser and why.
    

What we collect

When Sigloo encounters an acronym it has not seen before, it sends the following to our backend:

The acronym itself (e.g. "MAU")
A short text snippet (~160 characters) surrounding the acronym on the page — used to disambiguate meaning
Page metadata: domain name, page title, and language

This only happens for acronyms that are genuinely new — once a meaning is found it is cached in a shared dictionary, so subsequent users never trigger another call.

If you choose to suggest a correct meaning for an acronym (an optional action in the tooltip), we also receive the expansion you typed and an anonymous identifier — a random value generated and stored in your browser the first time you submit a suggestion. It is sent only with suggestions, is not linked to your identity, and lets us moderate contributions (e.g. spot abuse). Normal browsing and acronym lookups never send it.

What we do NOT collect

Full page text or HTML
Passwords, form data, or credentials
Browsing history or cross-site tracking
Any personally identifiable information

How your data is used

The snippet and page metadata are sent to a Cloudflare Worker (our backend), which may forward them to Google Gemini to generate an expansion for the acronym. The result is stored in a shared dictionary so future users benefit without triggering another AI call.

We never sell, share, or use your data for advertising.

Third-party services

Cloudflare — hosts our backend Worker and dictionary cache.
Google Gemini — called only for new acronyms, only when the shared dictionary has no answer.
Wikipedia — only if you click "Wikipedia ↗" in a tooltip. It opens a Wikipedia search for the meaning shown, in a new tab. Sigloo sends nothing itself, and the link doesn't tell Wikipedia which page you were on.

Local storage

Sigloo stores the following locally in your browser using chrome.storage.local. This data never leaves your device:

Cache — acronym meanings already seen, so tooltips are instant
Preferences — pinned meanings (per site) and hidden meanings (global)
Blocklist — domains where Sigloo is completely disabled
Anonymous suggestion id — created only if you submit a suggestion (see above)

Your controls

Blocked domains — open the Sigloo Options page to add any site where you don't want Sigloo active. No data is sent for blocked domains.
Hide a meaning — click ✕ Hide in any tooltip to never show that meaning again, on any site.
Clear all local data — go to chrome://extensions → Sigloo → "Clear storage".

Data retention

Entries in the shared dictionary are permanent (they are a community resource). Acronyms that Gemini could not expand expire after 7 days. Your local cache and preferences are permanent until you clear them.
